(adapted from Where Should We Worship? by Rick Muchow)
Every time I have an encounter with God, the place where I meet him becomes very special. One such encounter was at a cemetery at the top of a hill in Gemunden, Germay. Oh, what a time we had together (my God and I). When I think back to that experience, memories just flood my soul. But you know, worship is much more about relationship than it is about place.
A Samaritan woman once raised the issue of where to worship: "Sir, I can see that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem." Jesus replied, ".a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth..." (John 4:19-21, 23)
Now if you blinked for a moment, you may have missed the fact that Jesus really did answer the question of where (the place) to worship. He said the place is in spirit and truth. The (truth) is the freedom we experience when our worship is authentic and genuine. And the (Holy) Spirit, which lives inside each believer, joins in with us wherever we are, whether inside a building or outside. Worship is not limited to a place because we live every moment in the presence of a Holy God. So the next time you find yourself waiting for the next appropriate time to meet for worship, try that very moment in spirit and truth.
A Holy God is just waiting to meet you there.
