When we begin to study this magnificent Sermon, we must understand a few facts about message and the man that delivers it. First, Jesus was at the very beginning of his ministry. He had just been in the desert being tempted for 40 days. He had moved from Nazareth to Capernaum and chosen his first four disciples. He was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee and beginning to gather quite a following. All of these facts lead to an inescapable need – a need to deliver a foundational address to not only his disciples but the large following he was amassing. This sermon is the result and it accomplishes several things of great importance to those listening on that day, the rest of his ministry, and to us some 2000 years later.
- It is an authoritative teaching on what it means to live as a member of God’s new kingdom by covering both inward and outward conduct.
- It states his purpose – to fulfill the Law and prophets.
- It shows unequivocally his Sonship.
- It serves as a manifesto for the remainder of his ministry.
